Almost 45 percent of the auditoriums will be empty, today on the first day of this academic year. The data verified by Faktoje.al prove that until Friday, 8,775 thousand quotas from public universities were free out of 19,212 approved in total.
In the University Application Portal, where graduates are introduced to the criteria, programs, university application and the program where they have been declared winners, it turns out that at the end of the second phase of registration there are still thousands of unfilled quotas, while a total of 10,437 students were registered.
But in the shared congratulations for the start of the new academic year, the Minister of Education Ogerta Manastirliu seems to be referring to the initial quotas when she says that "Success to over 20 thousand students who sit today for the first time in the university auditoriums...", Manastirliu writes on her official facebook profile.
Branches to extinction
Environmental Science is the least popular branch at the University of Tirana, with only 2 students enrolled this year. Then comes Physics with 5 students enrolled and Chemistry with 8.
"We should have a national emergency while the ranks of teachers are dwindling and schools are looking for teachers to fill their needs. Especially physics, mathematics and language, or other basic subjects are incomplete. With this trend, it is predicted that in the coming years some of these branches, according to the law, will be closed if they are not filled with at least 10 students in two years", warns Rigers Xhemollari from the Civic Center.
On the other hand, one of the most preferred branches at the University of Tirana is Economic Informatics, where only 4 quotas have remained free out of 240 in total.

Computer engineering continues to be in demand at the Polytechnic University, as is architecture.
The architect, town planner and interior/design departments do not have any vacancies at this registration stage. Meanwhile, the engineering of mining resources, geology and geoenvironment are the three branches with the least registrations this year at the Polytechnic University.
The Agricultural University has been chosen by at least 638 students this year. The most sought after branches are agribusiness management and rural tourism management. Whereas, in the agro-food engineering branch, there is only 1 registered. Even animal husbandry and livestock product safety have only 2 registrations, while forestry engineering has 5 registered students.
Referring to the data from U-Albania, this year the University of Medicine continues to be chosen by the majority of students. Currently, this university has only 146 free quotas out of the 1,624 it had in total. General medicine, pharmacy and dentistry have no vacancies.
Districts with drastic decline
According to data from U-Albania, district universities continue to record a drastic drop in students this year as well. Gjirokastra and Korça record the lowest number of registrations.
Up to this stage of applications, 195 students have been registered at the 'Eqerem Çabej' university in Gjirokastër out of 599 initial quotas.
Branches such as tourism management, history-geography and mathematics have only 1 registered student each.
"The interest of young Albanians to choose the branches of teaching is drastically decreasing. Shkodra has one student for history and two for geography. In Elbasan, there are only 6 students for language and two more students for teachers," notes Rigers Xhemollari from the Civic Center.
Even the "Fan S. Noli" university in Korça has 357 students registered for the first time this year. The branches of physics, mathematics result with two registered each. Whereas, general nursing does not have any vacancies. Out of 75 quotas in total, there are currently no vacancies./ Faktoje.al
