For more than two months, the village of Boshanj in the Municipality of Kolonjë has been facing a situation that residents describe as catastrophic. Large swarms of locusts have invaded fields, gardens and orchards, damaging almost every agricultural crop. Alfalfa, vegetables, cereals, grapes, hazelnuts and fodder plants are among the most affected crops.
say that the damages are great and that they risk being left without production for their families and without food for their livestock during the winter. They state that this is the third consecutive year that they have faced the same problem, while claiming that the interventions so far have not yielded results. The residents demand that the institutions intervene immediately to curb the spread of the locusts and assess the damages caused.
One of the residents, Ylli Myrteza, says that the damage has spread to almost all agricultural crops and says that if the situation continues, the hazelnut production will also be lost. He says that the residents have asked for help, but according to him, so far they have not received a solution.
"Here the situation is really critical with the work of the locust. This is the third year in a row that this damage has been done to us. It has caused a lot of damage. It has not left us with potatoes, peppers, pumpkins, that is, all these vegetables of the current period, they have melted. Now the grapevines have started to bloom, and even hazelnuts. I have 500 hazelnut roots here. The damage will be colossal. That is why we want help from the state to intervene, because this is not a small thing. He works his whole life, he works the whole period and to leave like this, it is difficult. The municipality has never come, only these people from the agriculture of Korça, they even came here and said: "You have to deal with the municipality here". The municipality has never come. Only these people from the agriculture of Korça have come twice, they have brought and sprayed once or twice, and it has had no effect. You see for yourself", said Myrteza.
Farmers say the damage is not limited to produce sold on the market, but also affects the food reserves that families prepare for the winter. They say they are also concerned about the lack of food for livestock, as the locusts have also damaged entire areas of alfalfa and grass.
In harsh tones, Agron Myrtezaj expresses his dissatisfaction with local institutions, claiming that there has been no reaction to the situation and that residents have been left alone in the face of the damage.
“Karkalecin e zhduk po erdhi karkaleci vetë, kryetari i bashkisë. Vajta unë me vëllanë atje. Nuk ta them unë, po do ta thonë të tërë këtë.
Ku do vemi neve? Edhe dushkut do t’i vejë avash-avash”, shprehet Halili.
"We in the village of Boshanj have a problem with locusts. It has been two months since they arrived. The municipality came, sprayed them, but it didn't work. They increased even more. They didn't leave us any plants, alfalfa, they destroyed our gardens. That's why we want a solution from the municipality. Our damage is in hectares, there are hectares of alfalfa, grass," he said.
Meanwhile, Engjëll Bako says that locusts have also entered homes, while requesting the presence of institutions on the ground to closely monitor the situation.
"The problem is that the locusts are gone. They came into our room, we sleep with the locusts sometimes. What are we going to do now? Where are we going to stay? The mayor must not stay in Ersekë, if he comes here. We tell him, he is not coming. He has gone to the beach. He left us nothing. All the vegetables are gone. We are keeping them for the winter. We put grass in the slope. The cattle will eat this, they are eating, they are eating, what are we going to do with us? No one has stepped foot here. They have been notified and they have not come. I don't know what he is thinking ," said Bako.
The residents of Boshanj are demanding urgent intervention by the responsible institutions to curb the spread of the locusts, an official assessment of the damages, and financial support for the affected farmers. They warn that if the situation continues at this pace, the consequences will affect not only the economy of the families, but also the agricultural production of the entire area. /CNA
