The development of clean technology, a priority of the US government

President Joe Biden's climate envoy, John Kerry, says so much has been invested in clean energy that there can be no going back, adding that efforts to end pollution caused by the release of carbon dioxide continue. Mr. Kerry's statement comes on the eve of the meeting in Japan of the 7 most industrialized countries in the world. Renewable energy and environmental protection are among the main topics of the meeting. The US Environmental Protection Agency has called for new standards to eliminate pollution caused by cars. The proposals are described as some of the most aggressive restrictions in the country's history, targeting increased production of electric cars. The following material shows what impact the new plan will have on consumers.

Alex Brown has owned an electric car for ten years.

Mr Brown's passion for electric cars stems from his desire to fight environmental change.

"When the first child was born and I had just bought the new house I started thinking about his future and I was really concerned about the environment," said Alex Brown, who is also the vice president of the Electric Car Association in the state of New Jersey.

A few days ago, the US Environmental Protection Agency announced its intention to put limits on the amount of pollution they release

cars and trucks in the United States. The aim is to improve air quality across the country.

President Joe Biden's administration claims the proposals would eliminate nearly 10 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions, an amount equal to more than double the emissions of the gas during 2022.

"I think it's a move in the right direction. It's a shame we haven't done more," Mr Brown added.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that by 2032 around 67% of the new car market should be electric.

Currently, electric cars occupy about 7% of the market.

"It's an ambitious goal, but we need these kinds of big, bold decisions to tackle the crisis of environmental change," says Eric Verhoogen, a professor at Columbia University in New York.

In the countries of the EU and in China, electric cars make up over 20 percent of the market, according to research by the firm "Counterpoint" and the European Commission.

"This is happening all over the globe. It's not just happening in the US. If you resist change, others will benefit from it,” said Pankaj Lal, a professor at Montclair State University.

President Biden's administration claims that Americans will save over $1 trillion by avoiding the purchase of fuel if the proposal is approved. Among the optimism there are also worries.

A do të duan konsumatorët t’i blejnë këto makina? A do të ulen çmimet e tyre?

"I believe that the time will come when we will remember the old cars with fuel and we will say, 'they smell bad' and we will think how people coped with all that air pollution at that time?", he said . Mr. Brown of the New Jersey Electric Car Association.

The rules proposed by the US Environmental Protection Agency regarding the limitation of pollution released by cars must undergo a public hearing before being approved./ VOA
