Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) claims that thousands of iPhones belonging to Russian diplomats have been hacked.

In a statement released on June 1, the FSB said the hackers were suspected of targeting the iPhones of diplomats working in Russian embassies and consulates in NATO member countries, former Soviet republics, and China. , Israel and Syria.

The published statement did not provide any details or evidence of this alleged cyber attack. It only said that an "unknown" app that targeted vulnerable parts of the iOS operating system was used by hackers.

"Information obtained by Russian special services shows close cooperation between the American company Apple and the national security community, namely with the US National Security Agency (NSA), and confirms that the stated policy of ensuring the confidentiality of personal data of users of Apple devices does not correspond to reality," the FSB statement said.

Apple and the US National Security Agency have not yet commented on the FSB's statement.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow that the FSB's statement "deserves attention," although "we have no authority" to restrict the use of iPhones by officials.

Peskov added that while some Kremlin officials use iPhones, some have also begun to replace them with phones from other companies.

Russian media reported in March that some Russian officials were allegedly told not to use their iPhones for security reasons.

Apple and the NSA have clashed in the past over access to user data. The company has strongly rejected such a possibility.

In 2021, it was reported about a massive attack on Apple products through the Pegasus spying program, a program created by an Israeli company, NSO Group. The program was used by the intelligence services of other countries.

Apple stopped direct sales of iPhones in Russia last year due to the Kremlin's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. However, there are still ways to import these phones into Russia./ REL
