Mobile phone users have been given a warning about the amount of time they spend on their smartphones raising the issue of radiation.

Radiation emitted by phones can be harmful to our health, experts say.

Apple recommends that customers using its latest iPhones, including the 14 Pro Max and iPhone SE, try "a hands-free option, such as a built-in speaker, headphones or other similar accessories" to " reduce exposure to RF (radio frequency) energy”.

According to Germany's Federal Office for Radiation, those radio frequency exposures can be extremely high from some mobile devices, and Android phones top the list.

Joel Moskowitz, a researcher at the University of California Berkeley School of Public Health said: “People are addicted to their smartphones.

We use them for everything now in so many ways, we need them to function in our daily lives.

I think the idea that they are potentially harming our health is too much for some people.

Moskoëitz and his colleagues published a review of 46 case-control health studies on the issue of cell phones and health in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health in 2020.

He said: "Our bottom line is that approximately 1,000 hours of cell phone use over a lifetime, or about 17 minutes per day over a 10-year period, is associated with a statistically significant 60 percent increase in brain cancer."

However, things may not be so bleak as the UN's World Health Organization currently says that, as yet, "no adverse health effects have been proven to be caused by mobile phone use".

The German Federal Office for Radiation lists data on the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of each mobile phone.

SAR is calculated in watts per kilogram of body weight and determines the amount of energy absorbed per unit mass by the human body when exposed to a radio frequency.

Usually, this is based on an absorbance value recorded when you make a phone call with the phone to your ear.

In the EU, a SAR value of 2 watts/kg (w/kg) is allowed while in the US this is 1.6 w/kg.
