Drastic decision, Serbia coach resigns

Serbia coach Dragan Stojkovic has resigned from the national team immediately after the loss to Albania in the match held in Leskovac.

His decision came just a few hours after the end of the match, which ended with a score of 1-0 in favor of the Rossoneri.

At the press conference, Stojkovic confirmed that he had held a conversation with the president of the Serbian Football Federation and the general secretary, where he had submitted his resignation. He stressed that the loss to Albania was unexpected and that he felt full responsibility for the result.

"I was in conversation with the president and the general secretary. I submitted my resignation. I did not expect the defeat to the direct rival. I take responsibility and I am the only one to blame. I am sorry that we lost the match, but that is how football is," said Stojkovic.

Stojkovic, who has led Serbia since 2021, managed to lead the team to the Qatar World Cup, but recent group results have been below expectations.

The Serbian Federation is expected to make a quick decision on the name of the new coach, with the aim of restoring stability to the team for the remaining qualifiers.

On the other hand, Albania's victory has brought major changes to the group standings, making Serbia's position in the qualification race more difficult.
