A national team risks the World Cup due to the epidemic

The Democratic Republic of Congo national team will face strict security measures ahead of the 2026 World Cup due to the Ebola epidemic in the country.

The US authorities have decided that the team will remain in isolation for 21 days in Belgium, where it is currently conducting the preparatory phase. Any violation of the protocol could jeopardize the team's entry into the United States. The Congolese national team is expected to arrive in Houston on June 11, while they will play their first match on June 17 against Portugal.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has qualified for the World Cup for the second time in its history, after participating in 1974 when the country was known as Zaire. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization has reported 82 confirmed cases and 7 deaths from Ebola, while about 750 suspected cases have been registered.

The epidemic is caused by the Bundibugyo variant of the Ebola virus, for which there is still no approved vaccine or treatment.
