Mourinho returns to the bench, replaces the coach he previously "fired"

Benfica have sacked coach Bruno Lage after a shock Champions League defeat to Qarabag. President Rui Costa confirmed his departure and announced that the club is in talks to find a successor by the weekend's match against Aves.

The main candidate is José Mourinho, who is expected to return to the Benfica bench after 25 years. According to "A Bola", negotiations are in the final stages and the signature could come within the day.

Mourinho managed Benfica in 2000, before leaving after just nine games. His return comes shortly after his sacking by Fenerbahçe, ironically after the team was eliminated by Benfica.

Benfica are looking for a winning coach and Mourinho is seen as the right man to bring the team back to the required level.

In the Champions League, he will be a rival to several important teams such as Chelsea, Napoli, Juventus and Real Madrid.
