Mystery for the Eritrean national team/ 7 footballers disappear after a qualifying match

Seven Eritrean football players are missing after a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Lobamba, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), a Confederation of African Football official said.

"This incident is a... mystery. Eritrea defeated Eswatini on March 31 in Lobamba and no one knows for sure what happened next. We believe that all the players left Eswatini for South Africa, where the team stopped on the way back via Egypt. But when the delegation arrived in Cairo, seven players were missing," the official said.

The seven players were also confirmed missing by Eritrea's national team coach, Hesham Yakan, who is Egyptian. A member of the Eritrean community in South Africa said he had seen some of the missing players in Johannesburg, but declined to give further details, citing concerns for their safety.

The United Nations estimates that over the past 20 years, about 80 Eritreans involved in football have defected during matches held abroad. /CNA
