New heat wave/ Balkans prepares for temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius

The Balkan region is bracing for a severe heatwave, with temperatures expected to reach close to 40 degrees Celsius, according to the latest summer forecasts. The extreme heat is increasing the risk of wildfires, prompting authorities to issue warnings and advise citizens to take precautions, including staying indoors during the hottest parts of the day.

Widespread Concerns About Wildfires

Firefighters across the Balkans are on high alert as the heat wave intensifies, leading to an increased risk of new fires. Several areas have already been affected:

Croatia: Southern regions, focused on tourism, experienced wildfires over the weekend, forcing evacuations and damaging homes. Authorities have issued a high fire risk warning for the entire country for Thursday.

Albania: Firefighters have battled a high number of fires in recent days and there are fears that hot, dry conditions could spark new outbreaks.

Serbia: The capital, Belgrade, reached 37 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and is expected to reach 39 degrees Celsius at the weekend, raising concerns about extreme heat and possible fires.

Public Health and Safety Warnings

Government agencies and health authorities in several Balkan countries are issuing urgent recommendations to protect citizens from extreme heat and fire hazards. /CNA
