Noise pollution/ A threat to millions of Europeans, 66 thousand premature deaths

More than 110 million people across Europe suffer from high levels of noise pollution that harm health. The physiological stress and sleep disorders that result from this lead to 66,000 premature deaths per year and many cases of heart disease, diabetes and depression.

The report, by the European Environment Agency (EEA), focuses on noise from cars, trains and planes and found that 20% of the population in the European Economic Area (EEA) is affected.

Seventeen million people are exposed to particularly high levels of noise pollution as a long-term nuisance and almost 5 million suffer from severe sleep disorders.

Researchers, according to The Guardian, said the health damage is likely to be underestimated. Using the World Health Organization's strictest threshold for hazardous noise pollution, it gives an estimate that 150 million people across Europe are exposed.

The EU's target to reduce the number of people chronically bothered by transport noise by 30% by 2030 will not be achieved without further action, researchers said. /CNA
