The Unforeseeable Consequences of Technology/ How Can I Stop Them?

Technology, in addition to the help it has given in human life, is also accompanied by a series of unpredictable consequences. But what are these consequences and how can I stop them? The inevitable challenge of technology is that its creators quickly lose control over the path their inventions take once they are introduced to the world. Technology exists in a complex, dynamic system where consequences unfold unpredictably.

Below let's look at some inventions that were made with a purpose but their use and impact varied over time.

Thomas Edison invented the gramophone so that people could record their thoughts for posterity and to help the blind. He was horrified when most people wanted to play music. Alfred Nobel intended his explosives to be used only in mining and railroad construction. Gutenberg just wanted to make money by printing Bibles. However, his printing press catalyzed the Scientific Revolution and the Reformation, and thus became the greatest threat to the Catholic Church since its foundation.

In fact, early automobile enthusiasts argued strongly for their environmental benefits: the engines would clear mountain roads of horse droppings that spread dirt and disease through urban areas. They had no concept of global warming.

Understanding technology is, in part, about trying to understand its unintended consequences, to anticipate not only positive spillovers but also "retaliatory effects." In short, any technology is capable of going wrong, often in ways that directly contradict its original purpose.

As technology spreads, more people can use it, adapt it, shape it however they want.

Ndërsa kemi ndërtuar sisteme fuqie në rritje, ky aspekt i teknologjisë është ndjerë gjithnjë e më problematik. Si të garantojmë që kjo valë e re teknologjish të bëjë më shumë mirë, sesa dëm?

Problemi i teknologjisë këtu është një problem kontrolli. Nëse ky aspekt nuk mund të eliminohet, ai mund të kufizohet. Përmbajtja është aftësia gjithëpërfshirëse për të kontrolluar, kufizuar dhe, nëse është e nevojshme, për të “mbyllur” teknologjitë në çdo fazë të zhvillimit të tyre. Do të thotë, në disa rrethana, aftësia për të ndaluar një teknologji të përhapet në radhë të parë, duke kontrolluar valën e pasojave të padëshiruara.

Sa më e fuqishme të jetë një teknologji, aq më e rrënjosur është në çdo aspekt të jetës dhe shoqërisë. Kështu, problemet e teknologjisë kanë një tendencë për t’u përshkallëzuar paralelisht me aftësitë e saj, dhe kështu nevoja për kontroll bëhet më e mprehtë me kalimin e kohës.

Ne mund të mos jemi në gjendje të kontrollojmë pikat përfundimtare të punës sonë ose efektet e saj afatgjata, por kjo nuk është arsye për të hequr dorë nga përgjegjësia. Vendimet që teknologët dhe shoqëritë marrin në burim mund të japin ende rezultate.
