Scientists: Excessive intake of vitamin D may be harmful to health

A growing number of studies are warning that excessive intake of vitamin D, otherwise known as the "sunshine vitamin," can have serious health consequences.

While this vitamin is essential for calcium absorption, bone strengthening, and immune system function, experts emphasize that uncontrolled use of supplements can lead to serious problems.

According to scientists, high levels of vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia, a condition in which the concentration of calcium in the blood increases. This can lead to the formation of deposits in organs, an increased risk of kidney stones, and symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and muscle weakness.

In rare cases, toxicity can be life-threatening, causing kidney failure or other serious complications if not treated in time.

The increasing popularity of supplements has also increased cases of overdose, often as a result of incorrect dosages or uncontrolled use.

Studies show that in some cases, even small errors in dosing can have serious consequences, especially in children and the elderly.

Experts recommend that most people not exceed a daily dose of 600–800 IU, while the maximum safe limit is considered to be around 4,000 IU per day, unless otherwise advised by a doctor.

Doctors also suggest that vitamin D be obtained primarily through sun exposure and fortified foods, avoiding the unnecessary use of supplements.
