"The opposition should play its role"/ Gonzato: Parliament should not

The EU Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, spoke about justice reform in a television appearance.

A reform for which he said that perhaps the time has come to see how certain elements of this reform are functioning.

The ambassador further stated that the independence of the judiciary cannot be affected because otherwise the most important achievement would be affected.

The Ambassador said that important reforms require the presence of all parties and there must be public debate.

Gonzato stated that these reforms are not just pieces of paper and all factors must be willing to play their role, including the opposition.

As for the government, Gonzato said that his constant request to them has been to increase information to the people.

"You made a major reform in 2016, now maybe it's time to see how certain elements are working. The independence of the judiciary cannot be affected, otherwise we could affect the most important achievement. Since I came, I tried to bring the opposition back to Parliament because when you make important reforms you need to have a public debate. Parliamentary debates also include civil society, they ensure that the reforms we make have an impact and are sustainable. They are not just pieces of paper. For me, it is very important that all political forces play their role.

It must include all sectors of society. The opposition must be ready to play its role. People must be informed, this is my constant request to the government. Brussels is very attached to the idea that everyone must play their role. I do not like the term monitoring, because I do not think that Parliament should monitor independent institutions.
