Democratic Party MP Jozefina Topalli has reacted on social media to the election of the People's Advocate.
In his reaction, Topalli writes that after the withdrawal of signatures by several MPs, the process should have been stopped, but the Socialist Party has decided to continue.
The Democrat writes that the socialists are not voting for the People's Advocate, but for an advocate for the government. Topalli says that the law is valid only when it is in favor of the government.
Topalli's reaction
Today we are no longer discussing the Ombudsman, but rather the way in which the government understands the law: as a formality that lasts as long as it serves it, and is discarded as soon as it is no longer needed.
Some MPs have withdrawn their signatures. This, in any normal parliament, would mean an immediate halt to the process and reopening the procedure. But not here. Here the majority decides to move forward as if nothing had happened, because the candidate is “theirs” and the law must obey the will of the SP, not the other way around.
This is not just a procedural absurdity; it is a violation of the very function of the Ombudsman. How can an institution that arises from an illegal and imposed process protect citizens? How can a candidate who is voted for by force be called independent, even when the firms that brought him here fail?
Today, the Socialist Party is not voting for an Ombudsman. It is voting for an attorney for the government. And this is a dangerous message: that the law only applies when the firms are in favor of the government — when not, they are ignored. This is the standard of a government that fears any independent institution.
