Signatures for the People's Advocate/ Strazimir: SP is turning this process

Democratic MP Gent Strazimiri today accused the majority of turning the signing process for candidacies running for the position of Ombudsman into a farce.

In his speech from the DP headquarters, Strazimir emphasized that no DP MP has signed a candidacy proposal, to avoid dirty games and bargaining.

"The Socialist Party voted today in the Laws Committee to hijack the process of electing the People's Advocate, turning it into a farce, brutally deceiving, falsifying the facts and public wills of the deputies of the Assembly, even officially presented,

1. The nomination of candidates legally begins on November 17th.

No DP MP has signed a candidacy proposal.

2. Signatures to support the candidate to be heard before the Laws Committee cannot be used as a 'nomination proposal'

3. To avoid dirty games and bargaining, the Democratic Party has notified the Albanian Parliament on December 2, with the signature of each of its deputies, that any signature presented as a 'candidate proposal' is not and should not be considered as such or valid.

The claim that the communication in question was made 'out of time' is not only untrue, but also completely illegal.

4. Any deadline provided for in the law is a deadline that falls on the candidate and in no way on the deputy, who, as a representative of the sovereignty of the people, can withdraw support (even if he has given it) at any time, up until the moment of voting.

Under these conditions, none of the candidates presenting signatures of DP deputies as part of the 28 proposing signatures required by law meets the basic criteria to pass the session.

THERE IS NOT THE NECESSARY NUMBER OF DEPUTIES' SIGNATURES.

The DP parliamentary group, in the document sent to the Speaker of the Assembly on December 2, 2025, has also proposed in detail how the process should continue in accordance with good parliamentary practice over the years, determining who will be considered candidates who have the support of the opposition.

So far, there has been no response from the Speaker of the Assembly.

What happened today in the Laws Committee, in addition to being completely against parliamentary practice for the election of the People's Advocate, is illegal, in violation of the constitution, the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly, and the Law on the People's Advocate.

"The Socialist Party can decide to elect, with the votes and signatures of its deputies, any of its servants openly or secretly, but it cannot do this by deceiving that it is also the will of the country's opposition," Strazimir declared. /CNA
