With heart in Pristina, with prayers in The Hague

Today Kosovo, the youngest state on the continent, has its birthday, and February 17th comes with great joy in the heart of every Albanian.

On this journey to freedom, our brothers and sisters have achieved a lot. They have made progress in the rule of law, in establishing democratic standards, in the electoral process, and have also managed to repel many provocations and attacks from Serbia.

Today we are all in Pristina with our hearts, but in The Hague with our minds and prayers.

Kosovo also has a great challenge to overcome. It is the trial that is being held of its fight for freedom, for dignity, in the face of one of the most brutal regimes with the extermination machinery of Milosevic.

The trial against KLA leaders Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi is nearing completion in The Hague.

The indictment is an unbelievable fantasy, the prosecutor's claim is madness. I am hopeful that the Court will overturn and declare the commanders innocent. Because Europe has never known a more just war than the KLA.

This is the century of the Albanians and I am convinced that we as a nation will successfully pass this test. Innocence would also be the second independence of Kosovo, Upper Albania, as Ismail Kadare called it./ CNA
