New details emerge from the mysterious deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife

Authorities are expected to reveal more details from the investigation into the mysterious deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, whose bodies were found in their New Mexico home a few days ago.

The Santa Fe Sheriff's Office said tests for possible carbon monoxide poisoning were negative. Sheriff Adam Mendoza and fire and medical examiner officials are expected to provide details from the investigation at a news conference scheduled for later today.

Sheriff Mendoza said the Hackman-Arakawa couple may have been dead for up to two weeks before their bodies were found on Feb. 26. Hackman's pacemaker last showed activity on Feb. 17, nine days before maintenance and security workers showed up at the home and notified police.

Hackman's wife, Betsy Arakawa, was found with an open bottle of medicine and scattered pills. The actor was found in the doorway of the apartment. One of the couple's three dogs was also found dead on a shelf in one of the bathrooms of the house.

From the couple's home, authorities took several personal items such as agendas and phones for analysis, to help determine the cause of death.

Hackman, a Hollywood icon, won two Academy Awards during his career. He starred in such well-known films as “The French Connection,” “Hoosiers” and “Superman.” A career that began in the 1960s until his retirement in the early 2000s.

Arakawa, born in Hawaii, studied piano, attended the University of Southern California and met Hackman in the mid-1980s while working at a gym in California./ CNA
