How African designers are making their mark on global fashion

In recent years, African fashion designers have found support from international celebrities, including Beyoncé, Alicia Keys and Naomi Campbell. Now a growing number of fashion brands from the continent are preparing to enter global fashion markets.

Their style combines modern designs with the continent's cultural identity, an approach he hopes will help African fashion go global.

It is believed that within the next 10 years at least two or three African houses will stand as independent fashion houses alongside the big independent European brands.

A 2023 UNESCO report on the fashion sector in Africa predicted that demand for African high fashion would grow by 42% by 2033, driven in part by the rise of e-commerce. But it found that a lack of funding, infrastructure and training programs were holding back the sector.

The report also emphasizes improving transportation networks for the movement of raw materials and final products and suggests that African governments could "reduce or limit import tariffs for fashion brands that use traditional African textiles produced on the continent."/ CNA
