"I try to stay true to myself, but I have..."/Selena Gomez confesses
Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez is one of the most beloved public figures and one of the most successful, but she is a concrete example of how material things are not enough if a person does not achieve peace with himself.

"Emilia Pérez," which will be released in theaters on January 9, tells the story of a group of women who are out of the ordinary, but with whom it is easy to identify because none of them are perfect. And if there's one thing the former Disney Channel star himself has learned, it's just that, even if he sometimes finds it hard to admit.

In Jacques Audiard's musical comedy, which veers into drama and deals with sensitive topics like gender identity, she's in great company with Zoe Saldana (Avatar) and transgender Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón. Selena plays Jessi, a character who faces one surprise after another.

What is your relationship with yourself?

“I'm in constant discovery and I never stop learning, as I'm often told on the set of Only Murders in the Building. I try to make sustainable choices, be true to myself and use the platform I have to give a voice to those who don't have one.”

How does this relate to the film project?

"The film is about women searching for their identity because no one is perfect. It is essential to help those who feel on the margins of society and hurt."

Here comes a bolder version of Selena. Did you have doubts about this role?

“No, on the contrary, I was the one who asked to audition because the script was provocative, daring and challenging. Of course, it could have gone wrong, and I'm not fluent in Spanish, but I gave it my all. I practiced the language with a teacher for a month before the audition, but I thought I had been rejected because they forgot to let me know that I had passed the test."

Which part of your character do you prefer?

"Self-confidence: I would need more than I currently have."

How does a pop star manage to not only change genres of songs for a movie, but also pretend that he can't sing?

"Actually, singing live in a concert and in front of a camera are two completely different things. I don't like karaoke in real life either, unless I'm in a place where no one knows me - then I go crazy with some rap song. Unfortunately, I can't remember the last time I attended. The fact that the director, for example, did not know me was a strong point for me: he appreciated my performance, saw something in me and gave me confidence, seeing me as myself, without all the external noise.”
