Hollywood icon Robert Redford dies at 89

Hollywood icon Robert Redford has died at the age of 89.

"Redford passed away at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, in the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved," his publicist confirms.

"We will miss him greatly," said Cindi Berger.

Robert Redford was known for his roles in the films "The Sting" and "Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid," and won an Oscar as a director.

Born in Los Angeles, he began appearing on stage in the late 1950s, before embarking on a television career in 1960 and making his film debut in the film War Hunt.

He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance in The Sting in 1973.

In 1980, he made his directorial debut with the film "Ordinary People," which won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

He won an Oscar for lifetime achievement in 2002.

Redford was also known for founding the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, promoting independent films.

In 2018, he announced that the film, The Old Man and The Gun, would be his last on-screen role./ CNA
