On a summer day in 1981, July 29 to be exact, thousands of well-wishers filled the streets near Buckingham Palace, while 750 million people watched their televisions, eagerly awaiting the chance to see history being made before their eyes, in the privacy of their own homes.

20-year-old Lady Diana Spencer was preparing to enter St. Paul's Cathedral to marry Prince Charles, in what would be considered one of the last great state events of the 20th century.

A hidden addition to the wedding dress

Since then, and for 44 years, every detail of the day has been discussed in great detail, from Diana's dress and tiara, to the 3,500 guests, the 27 different wedding cakes and that famous balcony kiss. However, one small feature of the lavish spectacle has not received the same attention: a hidden addition to the princess's wedding dress, designed by husband and wife David and Elizabeth Emanuel.

On the Princess of Wales' wedding day to King Charles, it is reported that stylists had sewn a small 18-karat gold horseshoe-shaped brooch onto the back of her wedding dress for an extra dose of luxury on her big day.

The wedding dress cost 103,300 euros.

The event cost a whopping €65.4 million and was watched by a record number of people in 74 countries. An estimated 600,000 well-wishers gathered to watch the newlyweds travel through the streets in an open carriage, after the day was declared a national holiday.

For her wedding, which took place just five months after the couple announced their engagement, Diana wore a fabulous silk taffeta gown, estimated to have cost €103,300.

With its 1980s puffy sleeves and 24-foot-long train, it is still remembered as one of the most iconic wedding dresses of all time./CNA
