Gherardo Bosio, the architect who gave Tirana its modern form

From the State Archives: A testimony on the Italian heritage in Albanian urban planning

Tirana's architectural history bears the stamp of great names, but few have had the influence of Gherardo Bosio. This distinguished personality, who served as Director of the Central Office of Urban Planning, was the mastermind behind Tirana's transformation from a city with Ottoman traces into a capital with a European spirit.

In the funds of the Central State Archive (Fund 152, Year 1941, File 1199), there is a document of particular historical importance. This writing, drafted immediately after his death, serves not only as an obituary, but as a complete overview of the works that he initiated and that today constitute the monumental "heart" of our capital.

Below is the full transcription of this historical document: Archival Document: Fund 152, Year 1941, File 1199

"Architect Eng. Gherardo Bosio, Director of the Central Office for Construction and Urban Planning of Albania, has died."

Born in Florence on March 19, 1903; he graduated in Engineering, and then in 1933 in Architecture at the Higher School of Architecture in Florence, at which University he was later assigned to teach Architectural Composition. During and immediately after the conquest of the Empire, he had to deal with major urban planning problems, from which the ongoing realizations stemmed.

In April 1939, with the Union of Albania with Italy, he was commissioned by the Undersecretariat of State for Albanian Affairs to lay the foundations of the New Regulatory Plan of Tirana with the realization of the group of buildings of Littorio, the Square and the Boulevard of the Empire. Then, seeing the need to give an organic development to the cities of Albania, Ark. Bosio was given the task of creating the Central Office for Construction and Urban Planning of Albania, where he was appointed Consultant.

His activity was widely developed in all branches of architecture; from furniture to the design of important buildings and urban planning.

Tirana boasts a complex of works by Arch. Bosio, very important, which testify to the artistic maturity achieved and the exquisite Italian taste of the late architect.
We recall the Villa Luogotenenziale, the Casa del Fascio, the Headquarters of ODA and GLA, the Stadium and the Luogotenenziale Office Building, the Grand Hotel (Grande Albergo), all works nearing completion that will leave a prominent mark and will remember the name of Bosio in the city of Tirana.

The legacy that lived after him

Today, when we walk on the Boulevard "Dëshmorët e Kombit", we step into Bosio's vision. The works mentioned in the document, such as the "Qemal Stafa" Stadium (which preserved its facade in the new project), the Palace of Congresses (former rationalist-style buildings) and the Grand Hotel (former Hotel Dajti), remain witnesses to an era where architecture aimed for grandeur and harmony with space.

Bosio did not simply design buildings; he designed the urban identity of an Albania that sought to modernize. Although his life was cut short at a very young age, the "prominent trace" that the 1941 document foresaw is more vivid than ever in the silhouette of Tirana.
