Zelensky: US ready to provide security guarantees after war

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed Russia's weak economy during a meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Zelensky described the discussion as constructive, saying Trump's recent statement about his country represented a major shift in his policy. He said Trump seemed willing to offer security guarantees to Ukraine after the war ended.

The Ukrainian president said that Trump could be a catalytic factor for Kiev and said he viewed the issues he raised with him positively.

"I had a productive meeting with President Donald J. Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and I thank him for this opportunity. Today, there was an important focus on the return of children abducted by Russia and supporting our efforts to protect life. We discussed some promising ideas for promoting peace, and I hope they will yield immediate results. I am grateful to President Trump for his close cooperation with the United States. The President clearly understands the situation and is well informed about all aspects of this war. We greatly appreciate his determination to help end the war," Zelensky said. /CNA
