Zelensky, in Washington: Russia should end the war, we hope America will force

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Washington.

Through a post on social media, Zelensky declares that everyone shares a strong desire to end the war and have a lasting peace, unlike when Ukraine was forced to give up Crimea or when security guarantees were given in 1994 and they didn't work.

"I am grateful to President Donald J. Trump for the invitation. We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and credibly. And the peace must be sustainable.

"Not like it was years ago, when Ukraine was forced to give up Crimea and part of our East - part of Donbas - and Putin simply used it as a springboard for a new attack. Or when Ukraine was given the so-called "security guarantees" in 1994, but they didn't work. Of course, Crimea shouldn't have been surrendered then, just as Ukrainians didn't give up Kiev, Odessa or Kharkiv after 2022," Zelensky emphasizes.

The Ukrainian president further stated that Ukrainians are fighting for their land and independence.

"Ukrainians are fighting for their land, for their independence. Now, our soldiers are having successes in the Donetsk and Sumy regions. I am convinced that we will defend Ukraine, effectively guarantee its security, and that our people will always be grateful to President Trump, everyone in America, and every partner and ally for their invaluable support and assistance," he declared.

Among other things, Zelensky emphasizes that Russia must end the war it started itself.

He says he hopes America will force Russia to achieve a real peace.

"Russia must end this war, which it started itself. And I hope that our joint strength with America, with our European friends, will force Russia to achieve a real peace," Zelensky concluded./ CNA
