The Kremlin seeks control over the Donbas region

The British newspaper "Financial Times" and several American media outlets report that President Vladimir Putin has demanded that Ukraine completely relinquish the Donbas region, which consists of Donetsk and Luhansk - including those parts that are not occupied by Russian troops. Putin is demanding that these regions located in eastern Ukraine be transferred to Russia.

US President Donald Trump conveyed this request to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Bloomberg news agency, the New York Times and the Axios news website reported, citing informed sources. Moscow currently controls only parts of the Donbas region.

The Financial Times newspaper cited four people with knowledge of the Trump-Putin talks. According to them, the Russian President has proposed a "freezing" of the current front line in the southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhia. This means that there will be no further fighting or new attacks there. The Russian army has occupied large areas there.

Reuters news agency, which also spoke with an inside source, reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskii rejected Putin's demands.

Wadephul: There will be no peace at any price
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has formulated clear conditions for peace in Ukraine. "For us it is clear: the borders must not be moved by force," he told the Bild newspaper. A peace agreement also requires "clear security guarantees" for Ukraine. "We Europeans are ready for that - together with the United States," Wadephul stressed. There will be no peace at any price.

Merz and von der Leyen with Zelensky in Washington
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will participate in talks between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky taking place tomorrow in Washington, Von der Leyen and a German government spokesman announced.

Russia now controls a fifth of Ukraine, including about three-quarters of the Donetsk province, which it first occupied in 2014./ DW
