Who was Pippo Baudo/ The life and artistic career of the Italian television

Giuseppe Vittorio Raimondo "Pippo" Baudo was born on June 7, 1936 and passed away tonight, August 16, 2025. Baudo was an Italian television presenter, one of the most prominent in his country.

While studying law at the University of Catania, he became involved in events as an actor and presenter. He also learned to play the piano. He graduated with a degree in law, despite his interest in entertainment. In the late 1950s, he became a singer and pianist for the Moonlight Orchestra. In 1959, for the first time, Pippo appeared on Italian television during an episode of “Caravella dei Successi”, broadcast from Palermo.

He achieved success by hosting several RAI programs, as well as serving as artistic director. Pippo signed a contract with Mediaset, but he never managed to recapture his former success. He experienced a resurgence in his career when he presented "Novecento" on RAI, which led to the relaunch of the popular Sunday afternoon show called "Domenica In" and the "Festival della canzone italiana".

In the 1970s, he helped found and work for the private channel based in Catania, "Antenna Sicilia". In 1987, he presented "Festival" on Mediaset after a controversy with RAI president Enrico Manca. However, years later he returned to RAI 1 with Gran Premio; his show "Serata d'Onore" was broadcast on Rai Due.

In 2002, Pippo Baudo hosted the Sanremo Festival, after the 2001 edition had been a failure. He chose co-hosts Manuela Arcuri and Vittoria Belvedere. He left RAI in 2004, but returned in 2005, with the program "Sabato Italiano", on Rai Uno. On 2 October 2005, he hosted the Sunday afternoon program Domenica for the eighth time (1979–1985, 1991–1992, 2005–2010).

In 2008, Baudo conducted, for the thirteenth time, the Sanremo Music Festival, succeeding Mike Bongiorno, who conducted eleven times.

He was often called "Superpippo" (referring to the Italian name Super Goof). Baudo was also artistic director and president of the Teatro Stabile di Catania from 2000 to 2007./ CNA
