New wave of Russian attacks in Ukraine/ Several killed and injured

Several people were killed and injured on January 23, as a result of a new wave of Russian rocket attacks on Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kyiv.

Alarm systems have been activated throughout the territory of Ukraine.

In Kiev, at least one woman was killed and nine other people were injured, the mayor of the capital Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram platform.

Three districts - Pecherks, Sviatoshinsk and Solomyansk - were targeted in the attack, Klitschko said.

According to him, eight people have been hospitalized.

In Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, Russian Kh-22 missiles hit civilian targets, regional governor Oleh Synyehubov also said on Telegram.

"As a result, 28 people were injured. Two women, 56 and 40 years old, unfortunately, were killed", he said, publishing images of completely destroyed buildings.

Russian rockets also hit the city of Pavlohrad, in the southern region of Dnipropetrovsk, killing at least one person.

In recent weeks, Russia has intensified its missile attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine, causing numerous deaths, injuries and property damage.

The city of Kharkiv has been particularly hard hit.

According to Ukrainian officials, between December 29, 2023 and January 2, 2024 alone, Russia launched more than 500 Iranian-made drones into Ukrainian cities.

This wave of attacks has increased pressure on Ukraine's air defense capabilities and ammunition reserves, for which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has increased calls to allies to help Kiev.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.
