The UN children's agency says at least 972 Ukrainian children have been confirmed killed or injured in the violence since Russia launched its offensive in Ukraine almost six months ago.

UNICEF said on Monday that this figure represents the number of victims that have been verified by the UN and that the real number is likely to be much higher.

Most of the casualties were caused by explosive weapons, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said in a statement.

“Si në të gjitha luftërat, vendimet e pamatura të të rriturve po i vënë fëmijët në rrezik ekstrem. Nuk ka operacione të armatosura të këtij lloji që nuk rezultojnë me lëndime të fëmijëve”, thuhet në deklaratën e saj.

Zonja Russell tha se përveç fëmijëve që janë vrarë ose plagosur në dhunë, "pothuajse çdo fëmijë në Ukrainë është ekspozuar ndaj ngjarjeve thellësisht shqetësuese dhe ata që ikin nga dhuna janë në rrezik të konsiderueshëm të ndarjes nga familja, dhunës, abuzimit, shfrytëzimit seksual dhe trafikimit”.

Ajo tha se fillimi i vitit shkollor në Ukrainë, në pak më shumë se një javë, është një kujtesë se sa shumë kanë humbur fëmijët në vend.

Zonja Russell tha se agjencia e saj vlerëson se 1 në 10 shkolla në Ukrainë janë dëmtuar ose shkatërruar nga bombardimet.

"All children should be in school and learning, including children who are in emergency situations. Children in Ukraine and those displaced by this war are no exception," she said.

UNICEF called for an end to the use of explosive weapons in populated areas, as well as attacks on civilian facilities and infrastructure.

The Ukrainian government has accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians in Ukraine, a charge Moscow has denied./voa
