Somali forces end al-Shabab attack that left at least 21 dead

Somali security forces on Sunday put an end to a deadly attack on a hotel in the capital Mogadishu that killed at least 21 people and wounded many others.

It took Somali forces more than 30 hours to neutralize the fighters who attacked the Hayat Hotel in Mogadishu on Friday in a gun attack that began with loud explosions.

According to police authorities, the fighting ended around midnight on Saturday.

"During the attack, security forces rescued many civilians trapped in the hotel, including women and children," police spokesman Abdi Hassan said.

The hotel attack is the first major terrorist incident in Mogadishu since Somalia's new leader, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, took power in May.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack, according to a statement from a spokesman who said the UN supports the people of Somalia "in their fight against terrorism and their march towards peace".
