Trump warns: US could take Iran's Kharg Island

US President Donald Trump has stated that he wants to take Iran's oil and that he may occupy Kharg Island, the country's oil export hub.

"Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe not. We have a lot of options. That would also mean we had to stay there for a while ," Trump told the Financial Times.

He also expressed his belief that Iran had little or no defense on the island.

"We could have taken it very easily ," he said.

Trump's comments come as he ramps up preparations for a US military buildup in the Middle East, while considering a military operation to extract hundreds of kilograms of uranium from Iran.

According to foreign media, the Pentagon is deploying up to 10,000 additional ground troops to the region, with US Central Command announcing on Saturday that over 3,500 troops, including 2,500 Marines, had arrived in the Middle East.

Despite the threat to invade Kharg Island, Trump noted that indirect talks between the United States and Iran through Pakistani officials were making progress.

"An agreement can be reached quite quickly," he said.

Oil prices have risen since the United States and Israel launched massive strikes on Iran on February 28, with Brent crude rising to $119.5 a barrel in March, the highest since June 2022. /CNA
