Latest from the Middle East War/ Khamenei's Assassination and the Global

Tensions in the Middle East reached a peak on Saturday after massive US and Israeli air strikes on Iran. Targets in Tehran were hit hard, shaking the Iranian leadership and pushing the region to the brink of military escalation.

The attack killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Revolutionary Guard commanders and about 40 other officials. The Strait of Hormuz was partially blocked, with about 150 oil and gas ships passing through, endangering global energy supplies.

Inside Iran, some cities celebrated Khamenei's death, while others held mass mourning ceremonies. Abroad, protests in Pakistan near the US consulate left nine people dead, showing that the effects of the conflict are being felt immediately in other regions.

The international reaction was immediate: Hamas, Hezbollah, Iraq and Russia expressed condolences and condemned the assassination of the Iranian leader. The European Union and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas warned of uncertainty and called it a “decisive moment for Iran.” The UN called an emergency meeting, while the International Atomic Energy Agency will hold extraordinary sessions in Vienna to discuss the situation.

Global energy markets were shaken, as international diplomacy warned of the immediate and long-term consequences of the conflict. Russia condemned the attack as unprovoked aggression, while other countries called for calm and avoidance of regional escalation.

The situation remains highly tense, and the consequences of this conflict could affect global stability and the economy for weeks and months to come. /CNA
