The Taliban arrest two journalists in Afghanistan

Taliban authorities have arrested two journalists in the south of Afghanistan, where it is forbidden to broadcast women's voices on the radio.

A source, who asked to remain anonymous, told RFE/RL that Taliban forces arrested journalists Attaullah Omar and Waheedur Rahman Afghanmal in southern Kandahar province on August 13.

Omar is the Kandahar correspondent for the Tolo medium, while Afghanmal reports for the Etilat-e Roz daily.

Their arrest follows the arrest of five other journalists in different parts of Afghanistan in just one month.

Meanwhile, the Taliban's Ministry of Information and Culture has ordered radio stations in the southern provinces of Helmand not to broadcast women's voices, even in advertisements.

"All radio stations in Helmand have been warned that if they broadcast women's voices, they will be closed and their owners will be punished," said the manager of a station.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has called on the Taliban to stop their campaign of suppression of the press.

"Pressure against the media is isolating Afghanistan from the rest of the world at a time when the country is facing the biggest humanitarian emergencies", the Committee said among other things.

Despite promises of a free press, since the Taliban returned to power two years ago, they have shut down independent radio, television and newspapers.

Hundreds of journalists have fled the country./REL
