Why Greece should change its approach regarding the granting of citizenship

Last summer I was in a chic shop on Ermu street in Athens. I wanted to buy a present for my cousin's birthday. There were 2 wonderful and very welcoming women in the store who wanted to help me choose something special. One was white, while the other was colored.

Both spoke pure Greek, and seemed to be close friends. My fiance and I were amazed at the pure Greek the black woman spoke. (Actually I'm surprised every time Greek is spoken well by an Asian or anyone who isn't Greek).

I asked the woman where she was from. She cocked her head to one side, looking at me like I was crazy. (Not crazy, but stupid and insensitive.) Then he smiled and answered: "I'm from here. I'm Greek!". Well, of course she's Greek.

In fact, she is as Greek as I am. She is as Greek as anyone who was born in this country, was educated here, speaks the Greek language, has never known any other country, and has invested in the country. He loved and loves this country. But this woman lacks citizenship, as do many others who possess the same cultural qualities.

But what makes a person "Greek", and what does it take to become a citizen of this country? It is disappointing that the legendary Greek bureaucracy often hinders the country's efficiency, modernity and rapid progress.

Why does the government so easily grant honorary citizenship to writers, scholars, actors and philanthropists, handing out passports to them like candy, even though the latter may have no blood relation to the Greek people, and come to Greece just to study, write or rest.

They may not even speak Greek at all. While these citizens of Greece may give additional importance to the country, they are not as invested in the growth and actual functioning of the country as the woman who works in the shop in the Ermu neighborhood. I myself was born in Greece and brought to the US as an infant during the Cold War, along with about 4,000 other children.

Through no "fault" of our own, we were stripped of our citizenship when we left the country. Our biological parents were born in Greece, as citizens of this country. Our first blue passports with the Greek Republic stamp on the front were valid for a one-way trip abroad.

They expired after we used them to travel to the new adoptive parents. Now hundreds of us want to regain our birthrights as citizens of Greece by returning our passports. Adoptees may not share the same lived experience as children of refugees and immigrants.

But many of the latter were born through no "fault" of their own in Greece, grew up here, were educated and have strong roots. So why are they excluded from being full citizens in a country that is now their home? Many of them may be of a different color or religion, but they are culturally and thoroughly Greek.

Janis Antetokounmpo is a Greek-Nigerian. His parents were refugees and settled here, and gave their children, all born here, Greek names except one. The story of the most famous kid, Janis, amazed me as I watched him rise to fame not only as one of the greatest basketball players in the world, but as a good and decent man, a philanthropist and one of the best ambassadors ever. there is Greece in the world.

Ka shumë njerëz si Janis kanë lindur në këtë shoqëri, e kanë kaluar jetën e tyre me miqtë grekë, duke e dashur këtë vend dhe duke i kushtuar kohën dhe punën e tyre.

Pse qeveria, nëpërmjet një procesi të ristrukturuar dhe me kontrolle dhe balanca të kujdesshme, nuk mundet t’iu japë atyre shtetësinë greke? Jo të gjithë do të duan të qëndrojnë këtu. Jo të gjithë mund ta duan nënshtetësinë greke, por për ata që e duan, pse jo? Shtetësia ka të bëjë me pjesëmarrjen dhe angazhimin.

Si mund t’ia kushtosh jetën tënde një vendi kur nuk lejohesh plotësisht të jesh pjesë e tij? Për shembull, asnjë qytetar në Shtetet e Bashkuara nuk është më punëtor dhe nuk e do atë vend më shumë se sa emigrantët dhe refugjatët që erdhën në brigjet e tij, dhe që e ndërtuan vendin, dhe këtu përfshihen edhe grekët!

Sigurisht diversiteti ka problemet e veta, por ai e bën vendin më të mirë dhe më të fortë. Përqafimi i njerëzve, përhapja e filoksenisë së vërtetë, dashuria për “të huajin” dhe ftesa për ta, nëpërmjet kanaleve të duhura, për t’iu bashkuar vendit si pjesëmarrës aktivë dhe të angazhuar përtej aftësisë për të votuar, është jo vetëm gjëja e duhur për të bërë, por është në të mirë të sigurisë së vendit, pasi krijon besnikëri dhe mbështetje.

“Më dhatë mundësinë të jem këtu. Unë do e kthej dashurinë time për këtë vend dhe premtoj të punoj shumë për ta bërë atë më të fortë dhe më të mirë”- do të thoshte refugjati dhe emigranti. Secili prej refugjatëve dhe emigrantëve sot në Greqi ka potencialin e vëllezërve Antetokunmpo.

Atyre duhet t’u jepet një shans për të kontribuar dhe pasur sukses në Greqi. Dy janë grupet që meritojnë një vëmendje të veçantë në këtë rast. Së pari, janë 4000 të birësuarit me origjinë greke të epokës së Luftës së Ftohtë, të lindur nga prindër grekë, një fakt që ata mund ta vërtetojnë, dhe që kur u larguan jashtë vendit iu hoq shtetësia greke që kishin.

Së dyti është grupi i personave që janë fëmijë të refugjatëve dhe emigrantëve që kanë lindur në Greqi, jetojnë në Greqi, janë shkolluar në Greqi, punojnë në Greqi dhe flasin gjuhën greke. Ajo duhet të krijojë një grup të vogël pune për të konfirmuar identitetin, të krijojë një mënyrë për të përpunuar aplikimet në mënyrë efikase. Për ne të birësuarit, kjo gjë kërkon vetëm vullnet politik.

Për grupin e dytë, fëmijët e emigrantëve do të kërkojë më shumë guxim sesa vullnet politik, por edhe vizion për të krijuar një të ardhme të re, të larmishme, gjithëpërfshirëse për Greqinë. Forca e vërtetë e një vendi qëndron tek populli i tij. Është ai që vendos llojin e vendit që dëshiron dhe kujt ia beson qeverisjen.

Elpida. It is one of the most beautiful words in the Greek language that means hope. A hopeful country produces hopeful people, and can inspire them to dream of a country that has the ability and vision to evolve, and to be the best version of itself. The Greek philosopher Epictetus once said: "Dedicate the rest of your life to achieving progress." Let's make some progress now on the issue of citizenship, and in this case also the strengthening of Greek democracy.
