Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i?, who faced criticism from European Union officials for his trip to Moscow last week, said his country is committed to joining the Union.

"Serbia's political will is to accelerate its integration, to do its job. The atmosphere, I am now convinced because of the trip to Moscow, is not so good, but I believe that there will be appreciation in Europe for progress based on merit," Vu?i? said.

He made the statements at a joint press conference with the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, in Belgrade, as reported by the public broadcaster RTS.

Defying calls to align Serbia with EU policy toward Russia, Vucic visited Moscow on May 9 for the Victory Day parade marking the 80th anniversary of the victory over Germany in World War II. He also held a meeting there with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Full alignment with the European Union's common foreign and security policy and the resolution of bilateral issues are also essential elements for your membership. A key element of our common foreign and security policy is a clear condemnation of the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine," Costa said at the press conference.

Costa said Serbia must align with EU foreign policy to move forward on its path to accession.

Vu?i? also stated that he hopes that Serbia will open Group 3 of accession negotiations with the EU, on Competitiveness and Inclusive Growth, in June or October. For this, Costa said, Serbia must work on media freedom, fight corruption and change its electoral law. /CNA
