"The situation should be resolved through dialogue"/ Sanchez calls for

Five leftist governments in Latin America, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, and Spain, issued a joint statement today opposing any attempt to control Venezuela, a day after the US military operation that led to the arrest of Maduro.

The six countries expressed concern for regional stability following US military airstrikes and the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Celia Flores, who were transferred to the US and are expected to stand trial on Monday in New York on charges of "narcoterrorism."

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in a tweet that “ the situation in Venezuela must be resolved exclusively by peaceful means, through dialogue, negotiations and respect for the will of the Venezuelan people in all its expressions, without external interference and in accordance with international law.”

He noted that the Spanish government, along with the governments of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and Mexico, express concern about the events that have occurred in Venezuela and posted a link to the joint statement.

"We express our concern against any attempt at governmental control, administration or external ownership of Venezuela's natural or strategic resources," the statement issued by the Colombian Foreign Ministry said.

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday he would allow American oil companies to exploit Venezuela's oil resources, which holds 17% of the world's crude oil reserves. /CNA
