Airspace in Greece opens/Investigations begin into the causes of the technical

Greece has reopened its airspace after a temporary closure. The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority in a recent announcement announced that the problem caused by the telecommunications infrastructure has been resolved.

It is also announced that air traffic has resumed as normal, while it is reported that the causes of the technical problem are being investigated by the Electronic Engineers of the Hellenic Aviation Authority. 

Hellenic Aviation Authority Announcement: 

The technical problem that occurred simultaneously on multiple frequencies in the form of noise, originating, according to initial information, from the affected telecommunications infrastructure and communications within the Athens FIR, has now been fully restored.

The frequencies and operational systems of the telephone communication lines were restored to full functionality as of 17:00 local time, and the corresponding NOTAM notification was suspended.

Airspace capacity and air traffic flow were restored to normal levels as of 17:45. Flight safety was fully ensured at all stages of incident management, in accordance with international standards.

The root causes of the technical problem, which has not been recorded in the past to this extent and form, are under full investigation by the Electronic Engineers of the Hellenic Aviation Authority, in accordance with established procedures.

At the same time, checks are continuing at all broadcasting stations, while a frequency spectrum control flight is being carried out by a Hellenic Aviation Authority aircraft, with the assistance of EETT.

The Hellenic Aviation Authority is working closely with the communications operator OTE to fully document the incident and take preventive measures. /CNA
