"Respect the will of the people"/ European Union statement on

The European Union has called for the will of the Venezuelan people to be respected, a day after the United States ousted President Nicolas Maduro, saying it was the only way to resolve the crisis.

Speaking on behalf of 26 countries (all member states except Hungary), EU foreign policy chief Kaia Kallas called on all actors to show calm and restraint in order to avoid escalation and ensure a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

" Respecting the will of the Venezuelan people remains the only way for Venezuela to restore democracy and resolve the current crisis," the statement said, among other things .

Full statement by the European Union:

The European Union calls for calm and restraint from all parties involved, in order to avoid escalation and ensure a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

The EU recalls that, in all circumstances, the principles of international law and the UN Charter must be respected. The members of the United Nations Security Council bear a particular responsibility for upholding these principles, as the foundation of the international security architecture.

The EU has consistently stated that Nicolas Maduro lacks the legitimacy of a democratically elected president and has supported a peaceful transition to democracy, led by Venezuela, while respecting the country's sovereignty. The right of the Venezuelan people to determine their own future must be respected.

The European Union shares the priority of combating cross-border organised crime and drug trafficking, which pose a serious threat to global security. At the same time, the EU stresses that these challenges must be addressed through continued cooperation, in full respect of international law and the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty.

We are in close contact with the United States, as well as with regional and international partners, to support and facilitate dialogue with all parties involved, with the aim of a negotiated, democratic, inclusive and peaceful solution to the crisis, led by the Venezuelans themselves.

Respect for the will of the Venezuelan people remains the only path to restoring democracy and resolving the current crisis in the country.

At this critical moment, it is essential that all parties involved fully respect human rights and international humanitarian law. All political prisoners currently held in Venezuela must be released unconditionally.

The consular authorities of EU member states are closely coordinating to ensure the protection and safety of EU citizens, including those illegally detained in Venezuela. /CNA
