Spain closes airspace to planes involved in war with Iran

Spain has closed its airspace to US military aircraft involved in attacks on Iran.

The news was reported by Spanish media outlet El Pais, which said the airspace closure, which forces military aircraft to bypass NATO member Spain on their way to their targets in the Middle East, does not cover emergency situations.

"This decision is part of the decision already taken by the Spanish government not to participate or contribute to a war that was initiated unilaterally and against international law ," Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said during an interview when asked if the decision to close Spain's airspace could worsen relations with the United States.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been one of the most vocal opponents of the US and Israeli attacks on Iran, describing them as reckless and illegal.

On the other hand, President Donald Trump has threatened to cut off trade with Madrid because the US has not allowed its Spanish bases to be used in war. /CNA
