The gas pipeline connecting Lithuania and Latvia was hit by an explosion on Friday, January 13, but there was no immediate evidence of an attack, said operator Amber Grid, which transports gas from Lithuania.

A video released by Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT shows the fire burning at the site of the blast in Panevezys County in northern Lithuania. The executive director of the Lithuanian gas pipeline operator said the fire has been extinguished.

The flames initially rose about 50 meters (160 feet) into the air and could be seen at least 17 km (11 miles) away, the LRT said.

The Baltic news agency BNS reported that there were no injuries or deaths.

Povilas Balciunas, head of public administration in the nearby town of Pasvalis, told Reuters the flames were initially seen as a "big torch" before they died down./ REL
