US moves towards abolishing daylight saving time, House of Representatives

The US House of Representatives has approved a bill that aims to make daylight saving time permanent and end the twice-yearly clock change.

With 308 votes in favor and 117 against, US lawmakers passed the Daylight Savings Act, which would keep the United States on year-round daylight saving time, which is currently in effect from March to November.

The initiative is now expected to move to the Senate for consideration. A similar version of the bill has also been introduced by Republican Senator Rick Scott.

Supporters of the change argue that changing the clock twice a year creates confusion and disrupts citizens' routines. President Donald Trump has also expressed support for eliminating the system.

However, opponents warn that keeping daylight saving time year-round could lead to darker mornings in winter, affecting road safety and sleep patterns.

If approved by the Senate and signed by the president, the US would join countries that have abandoned seasonal time changes./ CNA
