Concern in France/ Drugs become part of the "menu" in restaurants

In France, drug use in restaurants, be they fast food chains or even expensive Michelin-starred restaurants, is now becoming the rule rather than the exception.

As the French newspaper 'Le Monde' notes in a lengthy article, access to drugs has become easier and cheaper over the years, psychoactive substances have entered French daily life and are now particularly prevalent in kitchens and restaurant halls.

The most recent quantitative survey on the use of psychoactive substances in the workplace was conducted in 2017 by the French Public Health Agency, with a representative group of 25,319 adults.

According to the survey, the hotel and food service sector had the highest rate of cocaine use: almost 1 in 10 employees reported having used it, a rate three times higher than the national average at the time, with 16% of men and 7% of women having tried it, Le Monde writes.

Although already high, these figures have most likely increased even more since 2017. At the same time, cocaine use has increased significantly nationally, as 9.4% of French people reported having used cocaine in 2023, according to the most recent report from the French Center for Monitoring Drug and Substance Addiction.

The drug problem is not limited to a few trendy shops in the French capital. It has infiltrated many different types of stores across the country.
