Over 3,000 Affected/Mysterious Parasitic Infection Spreads in the US

An outbreak of the parasitic infection Cyclosporiasis has affected more than 3,000 people in 31 US states, causing great concern among health authorities.

The infection, whose main symptom is frequent, watery diarrhea, is proving challenging to track, while its source still remains a mystery.

Public health experts explain that Cyclospora is an extremely difficult parasite to identify due to its long incubation period, with symptoms appearing one to two weeks after infection, making it almost impossible to identify the specific food that caused it.

Also, the food testing process is very complicated and requires washing large quantities of products to find microscopic traces, while contamination is likely to have occurred at multiple points in the supply chain.

Michigan is the hardest-hit state with over 2,600 cases, followed by New York. Meanwhile, concerns are being raised that reduced funding and staffing at federal health agencies have limited monitoring capacity.

The FoodNet program, which once kept various pathogens under surveillance, has significantly reduced its activity, leaving health officials to work in more difficult conditions.

Faced with this situation, epidemiologists are trying to reconstruct the source through lengthy interviews with thousands of patients about the foods they consumed before they fell ill.

Authorities are advising the public to thoroughly wash produce, cook vegetables well and temporarily avoid fruits such as raspberries, while investigations continue to find the common point of infection. /CNA
