Russia: Postponing nuclear talks with the US, due to differences

Moscow has postponed a new round of nuclear arms control talks with the United States because of differences in approach and because of tensions over Ukraine, a Russian diplomat said.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Moscow's decision to postpone talks with the US - expected to be held this week in Cairo - was made at the political level.

"We are facing a situation where our American colleagues are not showing that they are ready to listen to our signals or take into account our priorities," he told reporters in Moscow.

Ryabkov pretendoi se SHBA-ja ka dëshiruar që t’i përqendrojë bisedimet vetëm në rinisjen e inspektimeve sipas traktatit New START dhe ka shpërfillur kërkesat e Moskës që të diskutohet edhe për çështje specifike që lidhen me armët që janë pjesë e traktatit që synon kufizimin e armëve strategjike.

SHBA-ja tha më 28 nëntor se Moska ka vendosur njëanshëm të shtyjë bisedimet e Kajros dhe ka thënë se do të propozojë data të reja për mbajtjen e tyre.

The New START treaty, which entered into force in 2011, limits the number of strategic nuclear warheads the US and Russia can deploy, and also limits the deployment of land-based and submarine-based missiles.

Days before the treaty was due to expire in February 2021, Russia and the US agreed to extend it for another five years.

In August, Russia said it would temporarily halt U.S. inspections, arguing that travel restrictions and sanctions on Russian airlines imposed by the U.S. and its allies have made it difficult for Russian military experts to to visit US nuclear plants to conduct inspections./ REL
