Russia attacks a blood transfusion center in Ukraine

Russia has bombed a blood transfusion center in northeastern Ukraine, killing and injuring people, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Zelensky did not specify how many people were killed or injured in Saturday's attack in Kupiansk, Kharkiv region.

"This war crime alone says everything about Russian aggression," Zelensky said.

Russia has not commented on this event. In the past, it has denied accusations that it is targeting civilians - or that it has committed war crimes.

The town of Kupianski and surrounding settlements were occupied by Russian troops in the first days of Moscow's full occupation of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.

However, this area was liberated during a Ukrainian counter-offensive in September.

In a post on social networks, Zelensky described the perpetrators of the attack as "animals".

"Defeating terrorists is a matter of honor for every person who values ??life," he added.

The attack came just a day after Moscow said a Russian oil tanker was damaged by a Ukrainian drone strike overnight on August 4 in the Kerch Strait, near a bridge linking Moscow-annexed Crimea with Russia.

Russia's TASS news agency quoted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCSC) as saying that the engine of the Russian SIG tanker was damaged by a Ukrainian attack.

Russian Telegram channels first reported on August 5 that the explosions occurred in the Kerch Strait, damaging an oil tanker and temporarily blocking traffic on the bridge.

The SIG oil tanker was sanctioned by the United States in 2019 for supplying Russian forces in Syria with jet fuel.

A few days ago, a Russian Navy ship was seriously damaged in the port of Novorossiisk by a drone attack, for which the Security Service of Ukraine (SHSU) took responsibility.

Attacks in and around the Black Sea have increased since Russia refused to continue an agreement brokered by Turkey and the United Nations (UN) to export Ukrainian grain by sea./ REL
