Hundreds of migrants reach Italian shores

Italian authorities are scrambling to ease problems of overcrowding in migrant shelters as large numbers of boats carrying around 1,000 migrants arrived on Italy's southern coast and two of its small islands over the weekend.

Between Friday night and Saturday, about 50 boats arrived on the island of Lampedusa near Sicily, according to state radio and other Italian media.

Boats with migrants also reached Pantelleria, another small Italian island. During the last two days rafts with migrants sailed towards Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia.

According to reports, many of the migrants came from Tunisia and Afghanistan. The new influx of migrants has increased the overcrowding of centers where migrants are temporarily housed. The newspaper 'Corriere della Sera' wrote that the center accommodated 1,500 asylum seekers, almost four times its capacity./ VOA
