The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, has said that he cannot send money to "starving" family members in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

This region has been destroyed as a result of the war.

"I have many family members there. I want to send him money, but I can't", he said in a press conference.

"I don't know who is alive and who is dead", he continued.

Since the war started in 2020, this region has been cut off from the rest of the world, with no access to telephone or internet.

Vetë Qeveria ka thënë se lufta është fajtore për mungesa furnizimesh.

Programi Botëror për Ushqim ka thënë se pothuajse gjysma e popullsisë prej 5.5 milionë banorësh në Tigray, ka nevojë të madhe për ushqim.

Kjo nuk është hera e parë që Tedros, ish-ministër i Shëndetësisë në Etiopi, ka folur për luftën.

Të mërkurën, ai ka thënë se situata është më e keqe se në Ukrainë dhe ka sugjeruar se racizmi është mbrapa mënyrës sesi u është përgjigjur bota këtyre konflikteve.

“Mund t’ju them se kriza humanitare në Tigray është më e madhe sesa në Ukrainë, pa e ekzagjeruar. E kam thënë shumë muaj më parë, ndoshta arsyeja qëndron te ngjyra e lëkurës së njerëzve në Tigray”.

Fighting has resumed this week in the region, following a ceasefire reached between Tigray forces and the Ethiopian government.

The war erupted in 2020 after the prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, ordered troops into Tigray to topple the People's Liberation Front (TPLF), accusing the rebels of attacking federal military camps.

This decision was taken after several months of tension between the Government and the TPFL, which has dominated Ethiopian politics for three decades, until Abiy took power in 2019.

As a result of the fighting in Africa's second largest country, thousands of people have been killed, millions have been displaced from their homes and many more have faced poverty.
