Polish President: Putin is ready to invade other countries

Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to fire other countries after his decision to start the conflict in Ukraine, Polish President Karol Nawrocki has said.

"We do not trust Vladimir Putin's good intentions ," Nawrocki told reporters during a joint press conference with his Finnish counterpart, Alexander Stubb, in Helsinki.

Poland and Finland share a border with Russia and are both NATO members. They have been in a difficult situation since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"While we wait for long-term peace, permanent peace, which is necessary for our regions, we believe that Putin is also ready to invade other countries ," the Polish president said.

"That's why we are developing our armed forces, we are developing our partnerships and our relationships ," he added, without giving details of any concrete measures.

He said that the "security architecture" in the region has changed and that US President Donald Trump is "the only leader of the free world" who can force Putin to negotiate.

Last week, Trump offered to send more troops to Poland as he hosted Nawrocki at the White House.

Stubb, meanwhile, has spoken regularly with Trump in recent months, as European powers are demanding an end to the war in Ukraine.

"We are trying to explain that Putin cannot be trusted, that Putin is playing his usual tactics of dragging out" the process, Stubb said.

Similar concerns have been raised by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who said earlier this week that "Putin's imperialist plan will not end with the invasion of Ukraine," but that this plan is just the beginning./ REL
