The UN raises the alarm/ The food crisis will destabilize the Middle East even more

The World Food Program has expressed concerns that an ongoing food crisis in the Middle East could further destabilize the region.

Five countries in this region are facing inflation rates above 60 percent, while some others have triple-digit levels, said Corinne Fleischer, director of the World Food Program, for the Middle East region.

"When food becomes unaffordable, the result is hunger," she said in a statement.

Dependence on imports and the climate crisis, it is said, can only worsen the situation.

The World Food Program - the United Nations agency - has said that food in this region is bought at high prices, as the region itself does not produce enough food.

Meanwhile, drought, heat waves, forest fires and floods are destroying a good part of the fertile land.

Lebanon is the country that is facing these problems the most.

According to the World Bank, this country ranks as one of the countries with the highest inflation in the world.
