The UN calls on the Taliban to end the practice of executions

The United Nations has criticized Afghan Taliban authorities for carrying out public executions, calling for an end to such repressive practices.

In the last six months alone, 274 men and 58 women were beaten in public.

"Corporal punishment is a violation of the Convention against Torture and the practice in Afghanistan must be stopped," said Fiona Fraser, director of the human rights agency, and called for an immediate moratorium on executions.

The Taliban's foreign ministry said in its response that Afghan laws are set in accordance with Islamic rules and guidelines and that the vast majority of Afghans follow those rules.

"In the event of a conflict between international human rights norms and Islamic law, the government is obliged to respect Islamic (Sharia) law," the Taliban ministry said in a statement.

The Taliban began carrying out such harsh punishments shortly after coming to power nearly two years ago, despite initial promises of more moderate rule than during Afghanistan's previous administration in the 1990s.
